Bay City Black Cats fall to Lamar Consolidated in Close loss

On a night in which the Blackcats were looking to come out with win number two in District 23 4-A, the Lamar Consolidated Mustangs decided to end those lofty goals.

The Blackcats started the night by putting the first 10 points on the scoreboard, but Lamar would then end with a fourteen point flourish to win this tightly fought contest.

The Cats would strike first on a sustained 12 play, 67 yard drive which was capped off with Dennis Martin catching a 5 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Derek Brown. Shane Reynal would make the extra point giving the Blackcats a 7-0 lead with 35 second left in the first quarter.

Both teams would then just trade possessions for the remainder of the first half with punts and take the 7-0 score to the locker room.

The Mustangs would take the opening kickoff of the second half and on 3rd down, Derek Brown would step in front of a Scott Nohavitza pass and intercept it taking the ball to the Lamar Consolidated 35 yard line.

The Cats moved the football all the way to the Mustangs 3 yard line before penalties and loss of yardage would move them back forcing them to attempt a field goal on 4th down in Mustang territory.

Shane Reynal would come on and make a 24 yard field goal with 8:19 left in the 3rd quarter putting the Cats up 10-0.

The Mustangs then would take their next possession and drive the football with the power running of Keshon Leonard, workhorse back for the Mustangs.

Leonard gained all but the final 1 yard of a 65 yard drive that was capped off with a Scott Nohavitza touchdown run. Lamar kicker Billy Rodriguez would make the PAT, making the score, Bay City 10 Lamar 7 at the 6:31 mark of the third quarter

Punts were the balance of the third and most of the fourth quarter for both teams.

With the game coming down to the conclusion, the Mustangs would rely on the hard running of Leonard who would finish the night with 152 yard on 14 carries, thus a 10.9 yard average.

At the 1:52 mark of the fourth quarter, Lamar would seal the win with Nohavitza’s second 1 yard touchdown of the night and kicker Rodriguez’s PAT which would put the Mustangs on top for good with the 14-10 lead.

The Cats would have one last possession before succumbing to the Mustangs on down and the Mustangs taking the knee on the final play for the win.

The Cats offense had hard night with only 183 yards of total offense, lead by Derek Brown’s rushing and passing.

Brown finished with 87 yards rushing and 98 yard passing on the night.

Marcus Pointer was the leading receiver with 2 catches for 35 yards. Devon Mitchell, 3 catches for 23 yards and Larry Cunningham, 3 catches for 19 yards, also helped on the offensive side of the ball.

This week the Blackcats are on the road to take on the Angleton Wildcats. The Wildcats are coming off a big win against District foe, Rosenberg Terry. Angleton now leads District 23 4-A by way of their win over the Rangers from Terry.

Angleton won in overtime with a 50 to 49 victory and the Blackcats will be looking to play spoiler against the Wildcats. They will have their hands full, as Angleton has a multifaceted offense lead by quarterback T.J. Austin and running back Ryan Jackson. Angleton comes into this weeks game with a 3-0 record in District and a 7-0 overall season record.
