The Bay City Youth Workers Network wants to help the youth of Matagorda County.
On Thursday, the group came together at city council and asked council for support.
“This is not about just a church, this is about giving glory to God through service to others,” said Johnathan Dobbs, youth pastor for Nichols Church of Christ.
Dobbs said the group of 12 youth directors in the county got together to find ways to help the youth.
“We looked at Bay City Community Park and saw many opportunities to help the city to renovate that park,” he said to council.
The purpose of this group is to find ways to help the community, said Adam Anderson, youth minister Calvary Baptist church.
“I would love to get our youth involved in something bigger than themselves, and coming together could really make a difference,” he added.
Anderson said doing something like this could affect the community and schools in a positive way.
“We are looking to have some large unity services to mainly motivate Christians and reach out to the non-Christians,” he said.
The idea is to have these services at a site other than a church, he said.
To start, he said they thought of community involvement.
The plan is to go through a series of Saturdays and bring a couple of 100 kinds to the park, said Dobbs.
“We would like to help facilitate this and do several projects and at the same time have some fun as well, and really make this a nice park again,” he said.
The youth organization said they want to create a mindset of service in the minds of the youth as well as for them to see that they are giving back to the city they live in.
“This will build ownership,” he said.
The Bay City Youth Workers Network will begin work at the Bay City Community Park on Saturday.
“We will be going out there and doing some of the project that don’t require materials form the city, like trimming bushes and digging concrete,” said Dobbs.
